Relative Clause Constructions with Possessive Specifier Gaps : A Constraint-based Approach

چکیده

This paper is concerned with a particular kind of Korean relative clause constructions that contain possessive specifier gaps, as opposed to complement or adjunct gaps. Those relative clauses have been known to violate Ross's Complex NP Constraint, and various attempts have been made to account for the apparent island violations. This paper argues that those relative clauses have possessive specifier gaps in the main relative clause, rather than in the embedded relative clause, and so there are no island violations involved in such relative clauses. It is argued that the island violations in question can be viewed as violations of selection restrictions of very general kind holding between nouns and their specifers. It is not necessary to impose any special constraints to account for the apparent violations observed in the particular kind of relative clauses discussed in this paper.

English Free Relative Clause Constructions : From a Constraint-Based Perspective

Like other Indo-European languages, English also employs a particular type of relative clause constructions, the so-called free-relative constructions, exemplified by the phrase like what Kim ate. This paper provides a constraint-based approach to these constructions. The paper begins with surveying on the properties of the construction. We will discuss two types of free relatives, their lexica...

The Object of My POSSession

The puzzle addressed here is the appearance of the POSS sign, pictured at right above, in both attributive (1a) and predicative (2b) possessive constructions.2 Patterns in the morphosyntax and semantics of POSS possessives reveal that the underlying function of POSS across these constructions is that of a verbal predicate. The analysis of POSS as a verbal predicate is transparently supported by...

Anaphoric relations in Jakaltek

This paper will provide an LFG-based analysis of anaphoric relations in possessive and prepositional constructions in Jakaltek (an ergative Mayan language). In doing so it not only offers a solution to some previously unaccounted for language-internal incongruities, but also shows Jakaltek’s realisation of anaphoric relations of this type to be of typological and theoretical significance. Essen...

On the morpho-syntax of possessive constructions

Possessive constructions in English, Spanish, and French differ in several ways. This article considers variation in word order, in the expression of agreement, and in the appearance of a preposition. The article generalizes to Spanish and French Bernstein & Tortora’s (2005) analysis of English possessive constructions, particularly the idea that the prenominal possessive constructions are dist...

Corpus-Based Analysis of Japanese Relative Clause Constructions

Japanese relative clause constructions (RCC’s) are defined as being the NP’s of structure ‘S NP’, noting the lack of a relative pronoun or any other explicit form of noun-clause demarcation. Japanese relative clause modification should be classified into at least two major semantic types: case-slot gapping and head restrictive. However, these types for relative clause modification cannot appare...
